This is part of a series of replies to frequently asked questions received by the WBRU.

Q. During which period is the hunting of birds on land allowed?
A. From 1st September until 31st January of the following year.

Q. During which period is the live-capturing of golden plover and song thrush allowed?
A. The live-capturing season for golden plover and song thrush is without prejudice to Ornis
Committee’s recommendation and the Government’s decision to open a live-capturing season for these two species through the publication of a Legal Notice.

Generally, and without any prejudice as explained above, the dates of the season for these two species are:

Song Thrush: from 20th October to 31st December.
Golden Plover: from 1st November to 10th January of the following year.

From two hours before sunrise until two hours after sunset.

The season for any one of the two species may close before the date mentioned above when the respective quota for that species is reached. In autumn 2024, the golden plover live-capturing season closed on 27th December immediately after the national quota was reached. Four days later, on the 31st December, the live-capturing season for song thrush closed.
